The Advantages Of A World Aeronautical Chart Over A GPS System

January 24, 2012 Posted by admin

In today’s modern times, people heavily rely on computer systems to in order to get a certain task done. However, there are instances that a computer program may fail thus forcing the user to go manual. This is one of the biggest advantages that a world aeronautical chart has over GPS systems. When one starts learning to fly an airplane, one of the basic lessons that he or she needs to pass is WAC reading. This is where an aspiring pilot is taught how to plan out a flight route manually without the use of computer navigation systems. The only paraphernalia that they would be allowed to use is a compass, a ruler, pen, paper and a WAC. This is done in order to educate the flier in manual flight planning to ensure that they would know what to do in the event that the GPS system on their plane crashes.

Another advantage of a WAC is the fact that it is generally cheaper than a GPS system. You can buy a WAC from a Pilot Supplies store. That is not even half of what a GPS system costs. Furthermore, you won’t be able to carry around and install a GPS system in every airplane that you fly. It is mandatory for any airplane to have an updated WAC in the cockpit but it is also your responsibility as a pilot to always have a spare in your pocket. It is always better to know the basics so that you can be versatile enough to be able to maneuver any type of aircraft.
